Took on a job to live stream something I didn’t want to hosting on my own social platforms [the village’s annual cow-running is not for everyone], so I opted for a Vimeo Advanced subscription. At €115 + VAT for a month it wasn’t free but it didn’t break my budget.

On paper, it made sense:

  • Set up multiple streams in advance and share links beforehand – allowing me to test fully in the week leading up to the event
  • Stream simultaneously from iPhone (through 5G) and laptop/webcam (via friendly Wi-Fi)
  • No follower requirements (unlike YouTube’s 50-subscriber minimum)
  • Solid 1080p quality with adaptive buffering
  • Custom poster frames for each stream
  • Optional multi-destination streaming (FB, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.)

In practice — a bit more nuanced.

The good:
Setup is fairly straightforward, and the overall stream quality is reliable (obvs depending the local 5G connection).

The quirks, live:

  • iPhone streaming is fragile — it must stay in Do Not Disturb, and you can’t leave the Vimeo app even briefly without killing the stream (iOS limitation).
  • Two scheduled events randomly flipped to Private, cutting off access mid-job — not ideal when troubleshooting live.

The quirks, after:

  • Playback of saved videos is slow — noticeable lag when loading and scrubbing, despite a solid connection.
  • All recordings are saved under the same event name, with no timestamps — which makes downloading and organising unnecessarily painful.
  • Timestamps don’t always reflect when the stream actually went live — sometimes accurate, sometimes not.

Now that I understand the quirks, I’d be more confident using it again — but I’ll also be exploring alternatives. YouTube might be the obvious next test.

Final frustration:

Getting a proper invoice/receipt seems oddly difficult… so that’s a conversation with support pending.

Invoice update: there are two billing pages in your Vimeo account: the wrong one: https://vimeo.com/manage/team/billing and the page with downloadable invoices: https://vimeo.com/settings/billing/purchases – obvs you can’t navigate to from the billing page 🤦‍♂️
